I have had a few questions about the Sabit. Many people wanted to know why I designed it. I thought I would address those questions in this blog entry.
The Sabit was designed to accomplish numerous things. It is primarily a martial arts knife. It is not designed as a bushcraft knife or a hunting knife. I designed it to fit with the type of martial arts that I practice. I loosely based the Sabit on an Indonesian farming implement that was also used as a weapon.
There was not a knife on the market that I thought lended itself to everything I wanted to do regarding my martial arts studies and my own self defense. I designed the Sabit around my needs. It has also proven to be very popular with other people, including civilians who are interested in using it for self defense.
Many people think it looks like a karambit without the ring. This is not the case. The Sabit was designed to make rapid grip changes to accomplish different things effectively. The karambit can not accomplish this as rapidly. The way the blade was designed gives it many advantages over the karambit, especially when using the point. The Sabit has advantages of the karambit and a standard knife.
The Sabit has a longer blade than the majority of karambits. Although the Sabit's blade appears to be curved like a karambit, it is designed differently and is straighter. This design allows it to be easily inserted into something in a stabbing motion.
The design of the tip is much stronger than it appears due to the grind angles. The tip design allows the Sabit to be inserted into targets tip first very easily without damaging it.
The tip was also designed for a very specific and rapid snap cut. The tip design and blade shape make this type of snap cut extremely effective. Once someone learns how to snap cut, the Sabit will increase their effectiveness.
The blade shape of the Sabit was designed to provide an effective cut from just about any angle. The grind angles and the heat treating process make this knife extremely strong. That is one of the reasons we offer a lifetime warranty.
The handle was designed to fit securely in your hand while you are making a fist. It fits securely whether you are using a forward or reverse grip. It also allows you to transition between grips effectively.
The very end of the handle was designed as an optional impact device in the forward grip. It was designed to keep your thumb over it in the reverse grip to assist in keeping your grip during hard impacts.
The warranty is simple. If your Sabit breaks during your lifetime, my lifetime, or Mr. Coogler's lifetime, we will fix or repair it as long as we are physically able to. If you intentionally break or destroy the knife we will fix or replace it, but it won't be done for free. If the sheath ever breaks we will fix it for free.
There are other things the Sabit was designed for that won't be discussed in this public blog due to security and liability concerns. If you are interested in purchasing a Sabit, please contact Barnett Blades or Coogler Custom Knives on Facebook or by email.

Our Bowie knife.
We recently started making Bowie knives. These have always been one of my favorite types of knives. The one we are working on now is pictured on the Barnett Blades Facebook page. It is patterned after one type that was used in Louisiana and Texas before the civil war. We made a few modifications to it that we think makes it much better. It looks really big and heavy in the picture. When we finish with it, it will have a thirteen inch blade and be close to twenty inches in overall length.
The trick in making a Bowie knife, in our opinion, is to get the blade shape (Meaning the grind angles and depth.) and the overall balance correct. Then the knife isn't as heavy as it looks. It starts to feel "alive" in your hand. Some of you that have handled a quality Bowie knife will know what I'm talking about. It handles a lot faster and easier than it looks.
I have had some questions about why we made it so big. I made it to be a weapon first and foremost. It needs to be a certain length to get the leverage necessary to accomplish certain moves with the knife. The weight also has to be correct for these moves to be done effectively. When this is accomplished, and the operator has the necessary training, the Bowie knife is one of the most dangerous edged weapons you can imagine.
There are certain things you can do with a Bowie knife that you can't really do that well with other knives. If you take the time to get training from one of the people that understand the Bowie, you will be amazed how fast this knife is. Unfortunately there aren't that many people who can train you with a Bowie any more.
I have heard numerous people in edged weapon arts say it is just like using any other big knife. This is not true. There are some major differences. I believe the Bowie has some advantages when used correctly.
You should train with someone who knows the Bowie knife. It's fun to learn and it's part of your history as an American. I thought it was really nice to learn more about an American knife and what was basically an American martial art. More of us should study it before it is gone forever.
Check back on our blog site. We will be posting some videos on Bowie specific techniques. They will surprise you!
That being said, I expect our customers will purchase a Bowie for either utilitarian function, hunting, or to add to their collection. Rest assured that our Bowie knives will be well suited for outdoor use and still look like a work of art for your knife collection.

Mounting solutions.
We supply the Sabit with a kydex sheath. There are two mounting options for the sheath. We have a standard ripcord system and a teklok system. We highly recommend the ripcord system as it is very simple and much safer. The ripcords allows you to pull the sheath and knife from where you are carrying it. The cord pulls the sheath off the knife after it is away from your body. This minimizes the chance of you cutting yourself in a high speed draw.
We recommend the teklok if you will be carrying the knife on gear, like a load bearing vest, body armor, or anything else where the knife will be farther away from your body. We do not recommend the teklok if you are carrying the knife next to your body.
Please contact us if you have any questions about either mounting option. We will be glad to discuss each one with you and let you know which one will be most convenient for you.

Trainer model.
We are currently in the process of getting some trainer Sabits out on the market. As soon as we work out some issues with the sheath we will let you know. We are trying to get them to feel as close to the real Sabit as possible. Let us know if you are interested in one.
